<p><br>         Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is a lung disease that develops slowly over time. In the beginning, we may not even notice it, but as time passes, it gets much worse. In COPD, our lungs become damaged, making it hard to breathe. The airways become narrow, and they fill with too much mucus, which further blocks airflow. The tiny air sacs in the lungs also start to get destroyed.<br>The main causes, as mentioned earlier, are smoking, exposure to dust and smoke, and working in chemical environments. Some studies show that it caused approximately 3.5&nbsp;million deaths in 2021; approximately 5% of all global deaths are caused by chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.</p>

<p>If all these medical terms are making you confused, let me tell you what Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is in very simple language. COPD is a long-term breathing disease. In this condition, the pathways inside the lungs that allow air to go in and out slowly become narrow and weak. Because of this, a person has difficulty breathing.</p>



<p>Imagine you are breathing through a pipe.<br>If the pipe is clean, air flows in and out easily.<br>In COPD, this pipe becomes swollen from the inside, filled with blockage, or damaged. That is why breathing starts to feel difficult and shortness of breath occurs.<br><br>I have spoken to several COPD patients, and I noticed some common factors among them, such as smoking, using a wooden stove inside the house (I live in the hills, so indoor fire use is very common), and severe shortness of breath.</p>



<p>I also observed that Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) becomes much more life-threatening during winters, and around 70% of hospitalizations happen in the winter season. When I tried to understand the reasons behind this, a few things became clear.</p>



<p>First, in winter, cold air causes the airways to constrict. Second, mucus becomes very thick. Also, during winters the air becomes very dry. In hilly areas, air humidity almost drops to zero. Because of this dryness, even people with healthy lungs experience breathing problems at night. So for COPD patients, this becomes a very serious risk.</p>

<p>Emphysema occurs when the walls of the air sacs inside your lungs become damaged. This causes air to become trapped inside the lungs, which can make you feel short of breath (shortness of breath).</p>

Similarly, in pneumonia, the lungs fill with fluid instead of air.<br><br><strong>Types:</strong><br><strong>• Viral pneumonia:</strong> This is usually mild and resolves within 2–3 weeks without antibiotics.<br><strong>• Bacterial pneumonia:</strong> This is more dangerous.
